China will begin providing free folic acid supplements for 12 million rural women in hopes of preventing birth defects in their future children.
The programs goal is to be able to provide the supplement to all women in China wanting to have a child by the end of 2009.
Birth injuries effect 1.2 million Chinese newborns a year. But scientific research has shown that taking folic acid can reduce the incidence of neural tube defect by 50 to 70 percent.
